A new fire and rescue department is in the works for Jupiter.
Town officials announced Wednesday the time is right for them to create its own department adding that it will be saving taxpayers, WPBF reported.
Palm Beach County Fire Rescue provides services to the town under an agreement that started in 2020 at a cost of $20 million. The proposed budget for fiscal '24 is expected to be $28 million.
They will continue to respond to emergencies until the department goes in service, projected to be in 2026.
Officials said they will use a number of sources to establish their fire department including available funds, ad valorem taxes and financial debt.
They believe it will save each homeowner hundreds of dollars annually.
"We are very fiscally responsible; we have a very healthy reserve. We are in a great position to do this for our community and residents, and I think it is just time," Councilwoman Malise Sundstrom said.
The Jupiter Fire Rescue Department is expected to be completed by 2026. In the meantime, Palm Beach County Fire Rescue will continue to serve the area.
